NFWF, NOAA Announce $24M in Emergency Coastal Resilience Funding

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have released a Request for Proposals for the 2021 Emergency Coastal Resilience Fund. Approx. $24M is available in funding to support projects that increase the resilience of coastal communities impacted by hurricanes and wildfires in 2020 and 2021. Projects must be located within the National Coastal Resilience Fund (NCRF) Coastal Areas and be within counties that received a federal Major Disaster Declaration with a Public Assistance designation as a result of hurricanes or wildfires in 2020 and 2021. These include counties in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey, amongst other areas. As Field Liaison for the NCRF, Throwe Environmental is pleased to promote this opportunity in eligible Northeast and Mid-Atlantic communities. Questions? Emergency Coastal Resilience Fund 2021

The Emergency Coastal Resilience Fund was established to increase the resilience of coastal communities located within federally declared disaster areas impacted by hurricanes and wildfires. The fund supports conservation projects that strengthen natural systems at a scale that will protect coastal communities from the future impacts of storms, wildfires and associated natural hazards, while improving habitats for fish and wildlife species.

Summary

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), in coordination with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), announces the 2021 Emergency Coastal Resilience Fund (ECRF) to support projects that increase the resilience of coastal communities impacted by hurricanes and wildfires in 2020 and 2021. Funding for this program was appropriated under the Extending Government Funding and Delivering Emergency Assistance Act, 2022 (PL 117-43). The fund supports conservation projects that create and restore natural systems to help protect coastal communities from the impacts of coastal storms, floods, sea-level rise, inundation, coastal erosion, wildfires and associated landslides/debris flows, and enable communities to recover more quickly from these events, all while improving habitats for fish and wildlife species.

Goals

The ECRF seeks to fund shovel-ready projects to improve wildlife habitat that also improves community resilience and recovery both in and around impacted areas. Program goals include:

  • Help recover from 2020 and 2021 disasters, as well as reduce the impact of future disasters and associated natural hazards to coastal communities; and
  • Improve the ecological integrity and functionality of coastal ecosystems to enhance fish and wildlife and their habitats.

Geographic Focus

Eligible projects must be located within the National Coastal Resilience Fund (NCRF) Coastal Areas and be within counties that received a federal Major Disaster Declaration with a Public Assistance designation as a result of hurricanes or wildfires in 2020 and 2021.

Northeast and Mid-Atlantic: Map of declared counties due to hurricanes in 2020 and/or 2021. Eligible projects fall within the green area.
